Abstract

Introduction: Childhood cancer survival has shown considerable improvement exceeding 80%. Objective: to determine the risk factors for mortality in patients admitted to intensive care (PICU) of the Hospital de Clínicas of the Universidad Nacional de Asunción, Paraguay. Patients and method: a retrospective review of the medical records of oncology patients admitted to the PICU of the Hospital de Clínicas from January 2014 to December 2016 was performed. Results: Of 874 patients admitted to the PICU, 150 (17.2%) were oncology patients with a mean age of 9.8 years; 77 were female. The most frequent reason for admission was respiratory failure and shock (38%). The most frequent etiological diagnoses were acute lymphoblastic leukemia (37.3%), acute myeloid leukemia (10.6%) and central nervous system tumors (25.3%). Sepsis was present in 49.3% of the cases, septic shock in 38%, and endocranial hypertension 14.7%. One or more organs failed in 82% of the patients. Conclusion: Mortality was 19.3%. The risk factors for mortality by multivariate analysis were: age equal to or older than 10 years, mortality score PIM2 ≥10, presence of mucositis, neurological failure and renal failure.
